Zomato
Established in 2008, as restaurant aggregator and food delivery company, by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah has a net revenue of about 1994 crores and hires more than 5000 employees. 18.6% of its shares are owned by a Noida based organization Info Edge (India) Limited, 9.1% by Uber (an American mobility service provider), and about 8.3% each by Singapore based companies – Alipay and Antfin.
Interestingly, as of 2019, Zomato has serviced in 10,000 cities of 24 countries! Also, Zomato fleet travels about 2.4 million kilometer for delivery of about 600 thousand orders on Sundays! Moreover, as of 2019, Zomato processed about 16.5 million orders per month; which was about 40 to 45% of the total orders processed of all food delivery aggregators.
Delivery Apps and Plastic Waste
As per the survey conducted in 2018, about 22,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated by online delivery apps such as Zomato, Swiggy, etc. majorly due to its plastic cutlery. Considering the covid situation and higher motivation in masses to order food online, these numbers must definitely have increased exponentially!
Steps taken by Zomato to decrease plastic waste:
Sep 2018: Swiggy Packaging Assist program aimed to provide packing solutions largely made of aluminium and paper. They also planned to introduce meal trays and other items made of cornstarch and bagasse.
October 2019: Zomato team working towards providing bio-degradable tamper-proof packaging to avoid usage of single usage plastics.
May 2021: Zomato plans to launch an online marketplace for easy procurement of eco-friendly packaging materials by its registered restaurants.August 2021: They also provided option to customers to opt out of cutlery to reduce plastic waste generation by about 5000 kgs.
