India and Plastic Waste
In the financial year 2019-2020 plastic waste of more than 34 lakh tonnes was generated in India; which was 33.6 lakh tonnes in 2018-2019 and was approximately 22.8 lakh tonnes in 2017-2018. Thus, plastic waste generation in India increased by about 11 lakh tonnes in just one year, which was about whooping 47%!
However, on a positive note, as per the reports of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) over 60% of the generated plastic waste was recycled in 2019, and was claimed to be higher than any other developed country in the world.
Interestingly, it was determined that 80% of the generated solid waste comprises of plastic material. Thus, proper cleaning of the plastic waste source and its appropriate segregation can greatly help in reducing the plastic waste crisis and its environmental impact. As most of it deals with the efforts requirement from general public, in order to create awareness and get better support many Bollywood celebrities have joined the awareness efforts. The blog post covers this in the current topic – Plastic Waste Awareness: Contributions of Bollywood Celebrities in 2021.
